Pantry Potential-

5 ways to create an organized, stocked, and visually appealing pantry

I recently had the pleasant task of organizing my new pantry in our Florida home.  I love empty spaces that just brim with ideas and potential.  I used an easy to follow 5-step process to organize the pantry so my husband Dan can easily locate a snack before a work call, and I can quickly see what we need to restock for our upcoming visit from the kids.  We like to plan meals for the week and having the pantry organized helps with grocery shopping too.  We all know how annoying it is when you go to the store, spend a ton of money then come home to 3 boxes of the same thing hidden in the back of the pantry.  If it’s time to start over or refresh your pantry, try these 5 steps!

  • Start fresh-Completely empty the pantry
    • Clean the shelves and floor.  Get all the sticky syrup or flour dust cleaned up.
    • Throw away all items past their expiration date.  Look at each item.
  • Organize by Categories
    • Categorize your items such as grains, snacks, spices, baking ingredients, canned goods
    • Use clear containers or bins to group items together and label them.
    • Arrange all items logically so that frequently used items are easily accessible.
  • Maximize Vertical Space
    • Install or move shelves up/down.  Use organizers to make use of vertical space.
    • Consider adding adjustable shelves if needed
    • Use the back of the panty door if applicable by adding hooks or organizers for small items such as spices or kitchen tools.
  • Invest in Storage Solutions
    • There are so many storage solutions out there.  From the container store to amazon to the dollar tree you can maximize your pantry potential.  Stackable containers, baskets and my personal favorite,  lazy Susans can make the most of your space.
    • Clear containers are great for easily identifying the contents and monitoring stock levels.
    • Consider sliding drawers or pull forward shelves for deeper pantry spaces.
  • Use the FIFO system (First in, First Out)
    • Implement a FIFO system to ensure older items are used first.  Place newer purchases at the back of the pantry and older items towards the front.
    • Regularly check expiration dates and rotate stock to minimize food waste and missed expiration dates.
  • Create a meal planner space
    • Create a place near or in your pantry for a whiteboard or chalkboard and jot down grocery needs or weekly meal plans.
    • Keep a list of staple items you frequently use so you can quickly take inventory and make shopping lists.
    • Use your weekly meal plan to jot down spices or ingredients needed for meals.

I hope this 5-step system helps you create the pantry of your dreams.  If you’d like help with this process, or just have it done for you, reach out! Your pantry nightmare is my pantry dream.

Happy Organizing!
